Lot 371 Russian Broadsword AK - Sitka,c1800 - General Americana

This is a very old piece from the collection of Count Baranov (1746-1819), first Russian governor of the Alaskan Territory. He was instrumental in developing Russian fur trapping along the Pacific Coast, encouraging the exploitation of the California coast, which was a thriving area for otter and seal lions. He served as territorial governor from 1790 to 1818.

This piece has a 36" blade tucked in a wood scabbard. The length of the scrimshawed ivory (possibly walrus) handle measures a little over 5" and has a crack through the middle. There is also a hand forged guard . This gives the weapon a total length of approximately 41". - Woodward Collection
